Last year, I incorporated a guestbook-like script on my site that allowed people to make comments on individual entries of my journal (and reviews in my 'zine). It wasn't used much, though.
When I redesigned the back-end of my site to be database-driven, I created a custom-made message system that made it more difficult for trolls to spread their particular brand of joy.
But I decided not to launch it.
My site has been message board-free since late last year, and I don't think it's missed, either by my readers nor myself.
The question: how do you determine whether your site needs a message board at all?
(Unrelated question: what happened to all the posts that were in this forum up until a few months ago?)

Well, I miss your inline comment system...
I think to be able to build a small community around a single journal takes some work, and a bit of talent, and frankly I think the majority of journal-specific forums go as ignored as guestbooks.
The thing is, you as the owner have to interact extensively on it to bring people back. Hell, DNA is a forum for a very very busy journal site, but still you're looking at maybe half a dozen regular users. If you're like me with maybe half a dozen total readers, a forum is overkill.
(On your unrelated question? I don't know! "Show All Topics" shows only two! Grr. Must've been lost in that same quota crash that ate half of Clix.)

i have a message board but for my entire site rather than just for my journal. i tried for just the journal and just for my design site and neither worked very well. i wouldn't call my current board all that busy either, but it is doing better than the previous two. and i use it for all my updates and everything else.
i have deciede to maintain it even if it seems to not have that many visitors, if only because for me the updates are easier and we do occassionally get a decent discussion going here and there.
