I do believe this topic did reside in this board once, before the great hard drive crash that claimed the posts here.
I haven't had need for a guestbook in a good two or three years, but I find myself curious -- would a guestbook allow people who visit myself regularly but wouldn't send an e-mail or post on my BBS a way to say, "Kilroy was here"?
I can easily develop my own and control its contents, so I wouldn't have to depend on a free service.
I'm just wondering whether guestbooks are even still relevant. How much attention do you pay to your guestbook?

How much attention do I pay my guestbook? A lot. My personal site has a lot of my original poetry in it and as a serious budding writer I thrive on a lot of criticism, and a huge percentage of visitors are just too lazy to send in an email telling you what they think of your site and content.

I got tired of free guestbooks and wasn't interested enough in having one to beat out a workable one on my own server, so now I just don't have one. I do wish I got more email feedback, but not enough to get a guestbook again. I do sign other people's, though, but only when I really want to comment, so if they don't have a guestbook, I email them.

The thing about guestbooks and my personal debate with them (as well as counters) is soon my content revolves solely for the reader--not so much for myself anymore.
I know many diarists tangle with who they are really writing for. The feedback is good, yes. But if they really need to say it, they can write an email.
