Where is the Pacific Northwest? For those of you who are not American readers, or are just not familiar with the geography of mainland USA, you can locate the Pacific Northwest by taking your little hands and putting a finger down on the left hand side of the US map.

That's right, folks. The Pac NW. This Oncommon features the writings of those poor unfortunate rain soaked souls who are trapped in some of the most livable and beautiful cities in the country, eating croissants, listening to jazz, and sipping their double-tall vanilla mocha latte or triple (el dopio) Starbuck's coffees. Sarcasm and stereotypes aside, the Pac NW is an area of intense cultural exchange, a collection of port cities where museums and new cultural experiences are always right around the next corner.

Welcome to the Pacific Northwest.

Liralen's Adventures Through Life

Find out about eating 'pork entrails cooked in pork blood,' playing chess with your body, the Global Market, and Seattle. Liralen the poet, a weaver of stories, and Fezzik owner. Confused? Don't be. Instead, curl up in front of your p.c. and have a hearty read to someone who's 'Sleepless in Seattle.' Light and dainty, dancing with bright and vibrant colors, Liralen's journal is a veritable canvas of swirling, chaotic thought expressed in clear and eloquent prose.

Read about WOMAD, which stands for WOrld Music Art and Dance, which was founded was founded in 1982, and underwritten by Peter Gabriel. Read about the Iron Chef, what happens to people in Seattle when the weather actually gets above 80 degrees in the summer, and mountain biking. (You know, like actually in the mountains). And remember, "Freedom of speech favors the eloquent."

Tell Me a Story About the Devil

"Welcome to my online journal. I'm Jon Konrath, a writer in Seattle." Jon's a fiction writer, and perpetually working on one of two books, along with a zine. Jon describes his move to Seattle:

"I moved to Seattle in 7/95, but not because of the heroin or the music or the big computer company that is here that is systematically destroying the world, or because I read in some stupid book that Seattle would be a nice place to live, or because I hike mountains and kayak and mountain bike and stuff. I moved here because my friend got me a job here, and it was either that or I stay in Indiana and file chapter 11 and forfeit on my student loans and work in a K-Mart wiping up spilled Frosty-Kokes."

Jon first started keeping a diary about five years ago, but only on paper. Jon moved to the electronic medium about a year ago, and has faithfully updated during 1997. There are a lot of entries and a lot of good reading to do. Get started.

Inside Out-My Journal

Electra on Azalea Plath--

...Small as a doll in my dress of innocence
I lay dreaming your epic, image by image.
Nobody died or whithered on that stage.
Everthing took place in a durable whiteness.

Reflections on life in Alaska as a high school senior just ready to graduate, and be 'kicked out into the real world.' Everyone can relate to that theme, or worse yet, is fearing it. But, can you relate to discussions on Janeane Garafolo's weight, eating vegetables, wearing polyester suits and listening to ZZ Top during lunch? Inside Out buzzes and throbs with an internal vibe and life of its own. The writing covers Christianity, obscure and bizarre minutiae in the life of a cheerleader, sex, marriage, etc. Don't expect a lot of drivel about how cold or miserable it is in Alaska, because it's just not here. Instead, the landscape instead launches the writer into a higher and more inspired realm.

There are only two months worth of entries, so we'll assume (at least for the time being) that Brooke is a new-comer to this on-line journaling thing. But that's good. That's refreshing. Take some time to read, and be refreshed.
