[ Nita Daniel ] This week's ReEntry editor lives in a body that lives in Minnesota, and writes exactly when she feels like it. Which probably isn't often enough. Meet...

FRIDAY, MARCH 5, 1999

I chose my entries today because all of these writers give a sense of who they are -- physically, that is. I don't mean that they give a sense of what they look like, I mean that they describe lives as physical beasts.

I'm Sick
Page Two

Smoking around the quad one cold night, sitting by the atrium door, I felt my lungs and heart working, felt this engine (cliché!) hot center sending waves through me, felt me making myself go.

I like the way Eileen moves from the general to the specific. I might have that backwards. This entry grows from a very inner recollection of being a self inside a body -- a sense that everyone has every now and then -- to the particulars of her day. It makes its own lovely sense.

Boy Power
Melty

Still breathing hard from the last drill, I surveyed my body and thought, "I am 12 years old. I am a boy." I really believed it for a second.

Any girl jock has felt this way. Maybe because the language of physical exertion, of sports, is boy language. Young boys are so good at being inside of their bodies, instead of looking at their bodies. Melty maintains a whole 'nother part of her site devoted to playing hockey.

It's called the hockey diaries. I think of Melty every time I go to a hockey game, or when I watch my neighbor's kids play hockey.

hair today, gone tomorrow
la malinchista

i feel like she tried to make me over in her image, an image that had nothing to do with me, with my beloved curly wiry hair.

Most long term diarists go over appearance 'issues' at some point in the chronicling career. Hair is a fairly frequent topic. I like it that la malinchista likes what she went in with in the first place.

Original "ReEntry" concept by Gus () and other DIARY-L participants.
