DIARY-L FAQ: Which free webspace provider should I use? |
From: Lynda Bustilloz <cattybtch@3harpiesltd.com> Question: if you use a free webspace server, which one do you use, and what do you like/dislike about it? And if you used to use one but left...why'd you leave? Thanks for letting me pick your brains.... I know of Geo, Angelfire, Tripod, and Fortune City... any others out there with enough webspace to be useful to journallers? From: Katie Trame <mrkite@apci.net> I use Xoom. I haven't had many problems with it except a few times I haven't been able to FTP for about 20 minutes or so. You get 10 (or maybe its 11) MB of space and there are no annoying popups or anything. From: Pearie175@aol.com I'm looking into free webspace myself. I found http://www.talkcity.com. It must be brand new...they keep saying they're still working on bugs. So far after looking at some homepages, there are no pop-ups, but there is the requisite logo at the top of the page. It doesn't say how much MB space each member is allotted for homepages. From: Lynda Bustilloz <cattybtch@3harpiesltd.com> Talk City itself has been around a couple years, mostly geared toward chat. I've had difficulties finding out what their webspace allotments are as well. Anybody know? From: Gillian Skywalker <gillianskywalker@hotmail.com> Well, there's Crosswinds (http://www.crosswinds.net) which offers unlimited space, but is painfully slow. It's debatable weather the trade off is worth it there. I use Geocities, and a lot of things about it bug me. Popups. The fact that it eats files now and then. How you can't get to the 'system status' page if there's an actual problem with Geocities as a whole. (Actually, the last is more ironic than anything else, but it's still annoying.) From: Becke Boyer <bboyer@columbus.rr.com> Hmm...for business sites, there's always Hypermart (http://www.hypermart.net/) They're pretty lenient about the business requirement, so long as you're some kind of organization, and not just a personal home page. They give you 10 megs of space, full cgi-bin access, password protection, the whole 9 yards. Only a few complaints about them, namely those stupid pop-up ads. But where can you find a free page provider that doesn't have them these days? From: Al Schroeder <al.schroeder@nashville.com> XOOM!!! Best of all, so far, NO ADS!! Ten megs. Highly recommended. (Well, yeah, sometimes they go down, but that's true of any ISP.) From: Jeanne Lawrence <jeannelawrence@hotmail.com> I use Tripod, and I think the best part about it is that they keep increasing the amount of space. First 5, then 10, now 11 megabytes. The FTP access usually works, and the built-in editor isn't all that intrusive. I'll probably stay. The pop-ups don't bother me much. |
