Journalers prep for 'metaprom'
By Ryan Ozawa | 2000.3.26 - 22:25:57 HST

On May 15, diarists from all corners of the world will come together for a virtual, formal fete. JournalProm 2000 gives journalers a chance to relive or rewrite their high school prom memories.

"Now is your chance to have the perfect prom," writes Indiana diarist and JournalProm coorganizer Saundra. "No cheap crepe paper and punch, we have all the elegance that virtual imaginings can afford."

The colors are royal and white, and the theme is "Save a Prayer." Formal dress is required.

Only journalers can attend, and thus must invite another journaler if they want to bring a date. A date isn't required, of course. Entries will be "truly collaborative," written together.

And as the last bucket of confetti falls, based on the submitted entries, JournalProm attendees will elect a prom king and queen.

JournalProm 2000 is the brainchild of "two overly romantic screenwriters," Saundra and Boston author Patrick.

From 'Paperwork' to parenthood

Los Angeles diarist Diane Patterson and her husband Darin Adler are discovering why new babies rock.

The pair welcomed Sophia Siobhan Adler to the world on the morning of Thursday, Feb. 24, two weeks earlier than expected. Sophia is nonetheless happy and healthy, weighing in at 7 lbs., 5 oz.

Patterson made her greatest mark in the journaling world with her seminal essay, Why Web Journals Suck, first posted in January 1997. It is a must-read for both would-be and die-hard cyberjournalers.

She has kept a web journal since June 1996. Patterson's first journal, The Paperwork, recounted her days at USC working toward a Masters Degree in screenwriting. The current volume, Nobody Knows Anything, debuted after she graduated and began her "adventures in the screen trade."

A handful of escribitionists are getting together in Toronto this weekend.

Diarist Cara Leitch-Thompson, 28, is organizing the Online Journallers' Lunch, taking place at noon on March 4 at the Cyberland Cafe. A handful of people are already planning to attend, including web diary pioneer Carolyn Burke and Terry, traveling across Canada from Calgary to attend.

Any journaler in the Toronto area, or even any journaler in the mood to travel, is invited to attend, Leitch-Thompson recently wrote, although are appreciated.
