Diarists explore sexual identity
By Ryan Ozawa | 2000.4.11 - 16:13:43 HST

Outspoken escribitionists have come together to tackle their sexuality head-on with Outwrite, a webring for online journalers identifying as gay, lesbian, bisexual or queer.

The ring was established by Australian diarist Craig Andrews late last month. There are six members, including Emmeke, Von, Judy, and Illara.

The cornerstone of Outwrite is a monthly writing prompt, to which all ring members are expected to respond in their journals.

"These are intended to explore the issues, highs, lows and other concepts around the nature of gay, lesbian, bisexual or queer identity in our respective communities around the world," Andrews wrote.

For the month of April, the theme is "Divertika," or diverting from the "straight and narrow."

Web journalers get cooking
By Ryan Ozawa | 2000.4.11 - 15:56:16 HST

Online journalers are bringing their culinary acumen to the web with Out of the Kitchen, a new recipe swap site for diarists.

The project was the brainchild of a handful regulars on the #journals IRC chat channel on Newnet, including retired Pittsburgh journaler Dreama and Jennifer Dodd, 20, of Maryland.

Out of the Kitchen debuted with a tip of the hat to "Cooking with the Online Journalers," an apparently abandoned cookbook project originally proposed two years ago by Alaska diarist Jackie Rosenfeld. But a website has its advantages over a book.

"An online swap made perfect sense," Dreama wrote. "It alleviated the necessity for anyone to do anything other than create a site and a means to process the submissions."

Submitted recipes will be listed in one of fourteen categories, including and Breakfast Foods, Pasta Dishes, Desserts, Soups & Stews, and Vegetarian Cooking. Participants already include Amanda Cobb of California, Michael Moore of Kentucky, and Eileene "Iko" Coscolluela of New Jersey.
