The Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington, D.C., called the worst terrorist action against America in history, stunned the nation and the rest of the world. Four hijacked commercial jetliners were brought down, two crashed into the 110-story World Trade Center towers in Manhattan, one on the Pentagon near the nation's capital, and one in Pittsburgh. Thousands are feared dead, all air traffic has been halted, and all branches of the U.S. military are on high alert.
