The daily struggle. By Zach Garland () |
PART ONE OF THREE Let's say you've been writing in your journal for awhile but it's starting to get kinda boring. I mean you don't really have a problem with ideas exactly. You're just sort of losing that edge. It's not really interesting anymore. Maybe you used to do it because you thought it was fun, and it's been fun, but it's just starting to get a little too much of a routine. You do the stuff you gotta do for that day, then you come home and you sit down at maybe the same time of the day or just whenever you find the free time, and you just churn out a page pretty much the same way you always do. You still have stuff to say but you're just not in the mood today. You did the same thing yesterday and the day before that. You'd just like a change. Ambiance You're sitting there right now in front of your computer, at a desk maybe or just a table. Maybe you have a potted plant or a window nearby. Perhaps you dress your space up a bit with knickknacks and family photos. How long have you had your computer? How long has everything around your computer been where it is? If you're like me, you're probably in serious need of dusting. Check around your area and see how much of what's there really has to be where they are. Maybe you can move the speakers a bit farther apart or hang them on the wall behind the computer? Maybe you've been looking at the same little toys you bought on a lark at a toy store or via a "happy meal." Switch them out with completely new stuff. Doesn't really matter what. Whatever suits you at this moment. Make a point to do this little inventory and reshaping of the atmosphere around your computer about once a month or so, or whenever you get a little bored or stuck on an idea. Do you have anything you regularly do that you can change? Do you always use the same mug for that cup of coffee in the morning? Next time try a different mug. If you usually dress down to a T-shirt and underwear while composing your online diary, try dressing up for the occasion today. Actually put those clothes on that you usually save for a formal party. You'll feel silly at first, but you'd be surprised what just a change in clothes can do for your attitude and creativity while composing a journal entry. Or if you usually are fully clothed while alone at home on the computer... go ahead. No one's lookin'! Try it naked just once! See if it makes a difference! You don't have to tell anyone or anything. It'll be our little secret. Next time I'll talk about a few possibilities for redecorating your space, mostly using things you should have around the house or can buy real cheap at a nearby store. See you next time. |
