Bicycling babes band together Three California women are encouraging you to "Be a Boob." Babes on Outrageous Bicycles (BOOBS) was founded by a group of online journallers and friends in the California Bay Area who have become obsessed with bike riding. Its founding members are Bev Sykes, 58, Terri, 44, and Bitter Hag, 34. The group has already drawn eighteen new members, and the site already features photos from BOOB's inaugural ride, the Ride for Hunger which was held on June 8. "Originally we thought it would be a place where all of us who live in the same area could communicate," Sykes explains. "But it has quickly grown national and even international!" "We have a page for posting pictures of rides, and a message board for All Things Bicycle," she notes. The group also has its own merchandising. Pamie, Matt return to the web Two familiar names in the online journaling community have started writing again. Pamela Ribon, who moved from Austin, Texas to become a freelance comedy writer living in Los Angeles, has returned with "Squishy Revisited." Pamie's wrote her original journal, "Squishy," from June 1998 to July 2001, and it was featured in numerous newspaper articles and won her a following that carried on even after she took it offline. She had won the "Legacy Award" in The Diarist Awards in 2000, and was a speaker at the first JournalCon. In the entry announcing her return, Pamie brings long-time readers up to speed on where she's been. She proudly announced that her book, "Why Girls are Weird," will be published next July, and will include many of her favorite entries from "Squishy." Also back in the writing game is 31-year-old Texas journaler Matthew Sturges. Sturges had journaled for nearly four years, from 1996 to 2000, in "Same as a Picture +/-." He kept busy, however, during his two year break. He lost his job, found a new one, and moved house. He and his wife now have a 17-month-old daughter named Camille, and earlier this year, he published his first novel, "Midwinter," which a friend described as "a classic sword-and-sorcery quest novel." His new journal site, presented in weblog format, is "Exposure." New group aims for practical fitness Journalers who seek a comfortable balance between fitness and everyday life are invited to join Cornucopia. Created by 28-year-old New Hampshire diarist Adrith Bicchieri, the group emphasizes realistic fitness goals and offers advice and encouragement via an e-mail discussion list. "Fitness is important, but by no means the sole focus of our existence - we balance family, friends, career, studies, and hobbies," the site explains. "With that in mind, the members of Cornucopia are working hard toward their own personal fitness goals. For some, it's to walk or run a road race ... for others, it's to meet a distance goal on foot, by bike, rollerblading, or swimming." Fourteen people have joined so far, and membership is still open. Weblog directory to be rebuilt Globe of Blogs, a new directory of weblogs from around the world, is about to be supercharged. The directory, which originally launched in March, was created by 25-year-old Las Vegas diarist Heather, who describes it as "the weblog equivalent of the Diarist.Net Registry." Heather has now teamed up with Maryland designer Jennifer Dodd to upgrade Globe of Blogs with a database that will allow 'bloggers to categorize their sites into a wider range of categories. The new Globe of Blogs will include categories ranging from various careers, hobbies, health and fitness issues, lifestyles, sports and religions, as well as the ability to flag a site containing adult content. Authors will be able to select up to five different categories for their weblog. New submissions are of course welcome, and all 'bloggers who were previously listed are strongly encouraged to re-register. |
